About this Property
Located about 10km north of Kyogle at Kilgra is this truly unique historic property on 10 acres that offers heaps of charm and potential. The original 'Wyangarie' homestead was built circa 1840s by the Bundock family with an addition built in the 1970s.
The homestead and its grounds are architecturally significant as a rare surviving example of an original squatter's station. The building is direct evidence of the earliest European exploration and occupation of the Richmond Valley in the area between the Razor Back and Tooloom ranges. It provides a remarkable example of an 1840s homestead and has been continuously associated since then with pastoral activities. The Bundock family, its principal owners up to 1898, were very influential in the district and held in high esteem by the local community. At its largest size, the estate was 28,000 hectares circa 1867, with the bulk being sold off in 200-250 acre lots by the early 1900s. Today the homestead sits on a manageable 4 hectares.
The Wyangarie homestead sits on a gentle knoll facing a broad flat plain behind which lie the Richmond River and the hills of the Tweed Range. As well as some remnant eucalypts, some exotic plants such as Moreton Bay Fig Trees, Hoop Pine, Bunya, Burdekin Plum, and Himalayan Cypresses grow. The homestead was sited to avoid flooding, to catch prevailing winds, and take advantage of the good views.
The original side of the home, constructed of rendered locally made bricks with a galvanised iron roof, has the kitchen with exposed brick, gas cooking, and butler's pantry, as well as a separate office, and adjoining bedroom. There are two spacious living rooms connected by solid timber doors with extra high ceilings and fireplaces. The large covered verandah offers spectacular rural views.
The addition is connected by a breezeway/dining area that leads to another living room with fireplace, family bathroom, laundry and two large bedrooms with ceiling fans. There's a massive covered entertaining area adjoining the carport, as well as a double lockup shed for all your storage needs. There is a bore to supply water.
This gem of a property is full of original character and is ready to be restored to its original grandeur. Ideal for the renovator who appreciates the historic aspects of the property, this homestead is a rare find for those seeking a one-of-a-kind home with a peaceful country lifestyle.
