Ninth Island is a freehold island situated in the Bass Strait between Melbourne and Tasmania. There are reportedly nearly 5,000 islands around Tasmania, but only a dozen are freehold. Ninth Island is about 1.3 km long, 550 meters wide, and covers 40 acres (160,390 square meters). It is famous for 20,000 birds and penguins.
